How was this project possible, and why did they need two different AIs? The first AI algorithm listened to isolated hooks, rhythms, and melodies of each one of the artists. This essentially means that the AI listened to a lot of the artists' songs. After learning the songs, the AI-generated a string of all-new hooks, rhythms, and melodies, to create a brand new song in the same style as the 27 club artist. So now we have the music. Because the music AI could not tell what words the singer was singing, the vocal part sounded like a garbled mess, and Over the Bridge needed to implement a second AI for the words of the song, called lyrics. The second AI was given the lyrics from all the songs the music AI listened to. This lyric AI took the lyrics, learned from them, and created a new set of lyrics to match the melody that the music AI had generated. Then, a singer from a cover band of the artist was brought in to perform the AI-generated melody and AI-generated lyrics in the style of the artist. This is key because these singers are known for their ability to closely mimic and channel the performances of the artist. Finally, an audio engineer took these AI-generated musical elements, lyrics, and vocal performances and created Lost Tapes of the 27 Club, making new four songs in total. What is the 27 club? Several popular musicians like Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Robert Johnson, and Jim Morrison all passed away at the age of 27. This gave rise to the myth and idea of there being some sort of association with being a prolific artist and dying at the age of 27. A recent study by Help Musicians UK found that 71.1% of musicians have experiences incidences of anxiety and panic attacks
68.5% of musicians experience depression Since August 2017, Over The Bridge has trained, educated and/or emotionally supported over 2,000 music industry members. I spoke with founding partner and executive director Ace Piva to learn more about the Lost Tapes project and what the organization is doing now!
